Om denne boken

"Karavaani ja muita juttuja" by Pentti Haanpää is a collection of short stories written in the early 20th century. Set in Finland’s far north during prohibition and big logging drives, it follows smugglers, laborers, and authorities navigating the tense line between survival, law, and chance. With figures like Aaroni, a war-hardened liquor-caravan leader, and Haru, an urbane bootlegging magnate addicted to risk, the pieces blend gritty realism with mordant social satire.

The opening of the collection follows a night march of bootleggers led by Aaroni across the wilderness; a decoy plan backfires when a false “guide” funnels the load to a police trap at the river, yet Aaroni slips away and later pays his men’s wages in full, revealing a rough personal code. A city-set tale then sketches Haru, a wealthy, untouchable organizer of the trade, who personally takes the wheel for a daring run—rattling across a railway bridge ahead of a train, staring down a young policeman at a roadblock, and ultimately surviving an apparent murder attempt by his embittered driver. A brief satirical piece shows an idle man conducting a “statistical study” by offering passersby plain water as if it were liquor, exposing eagerness, hypocrisy, and fear in their reactions. A lyrical-essayistic interlude depicts the felling and river-driving of half a million logs—men, horses, tools, and the river’s muscle—ending with a stripped landscape. Finally, a rough episode of idle days and drink sees a small, ragged lumberjack steal moonshine, clash with other men, stab in self-defense amid gunfire, bed down in a farmhouse, and wake to policemen and handcuffs.
