The novel explores themes of art, family dynamics, and the tensions of personal fulfillment. At the start of "Rosshalde," we are introduced to Johann Veraguth and his family living on the estate, which is divided between the artist's secluded atelier and his wife's more traditional home. Veraguth's relationship with his family, especially with his estranged older son Albert and his younger son Pierre, is strained and complex. As Johann immerses himself in painting, he often reflects on his past and struggles with the emotional distance in his life, highlighted by the tensions between his artistic ambitions and familial obligations.
