Om denne boken

"Scientific Lectures and Essays" by Charles Kingsley is a collection of scholarly lectures written in the mid-19th century. The essays cover a range of topics including bio-geology, the study of natural history, superstition, and the interrelation of science and society, reflecting the burgeoning interest in science during this period. The opening of the collection introduces Kingsley's address on bio-geology, where he reflects on the urgent public health issues stemming from preventable diseases, hinting at the societal responsibility of scientific inquiry. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the distribution of plants and animals in relation to their environments and encourages young naturalists to ask probing questions about the origins and survival of species. This section sets the stage for a broader exploration of natural science as interconnected with societal well-being, while addressing the challenges posed by ignorance and environmental degradation.
