Synti: Nelinäytöksinen draama

Om denne boken

"Synti" by Lauri Haarla is a play written in the early 20th century. Set in Finland during the witch hunts, it follows Pastor Elias Kålk’s consuming desire for the orphan Agnes and the embattled lives of Leena Pirjetantytär and her lame son Ismael as village piety, superstition, and authority collide. The drama promises a fierce reckoning with spiritual hypocrisy, sexual coercion, and communal violence sharpened by Walpurgis Night rites.

The opening of the play takes place on Walpurgis Eve in a poorhouse: Leena and her fragile son Ismael toil and worry, a “possessed” inmate spits dark verses at the Kolk line, and a swaggering student steals drink. Taneli Öhrn comes to dress Agnes as the Vappu-bride under orders from the pastor and the royal bailiff; Elias Kålk soon arrives and cloaks his pursuit of Agnes in sacred language. The procession seizes Agnes despite Ismael’s pleas, leaving him shattered. Shifting to the parsonage days later, Elias and Agnes show intimacy; Geila confronts the pastor’s betrayal; students mock and stone the house; and Ismael, tormented by a demonic vision, unravels. Churchwarden Laukkus challenges Kålk on charity, authority, and morals; Kålk vows to smash the Marian image and purge “superstition” with the bailiff’s backing, just before Leena appears to demand communion—where the excerpt cuts off.
