"The Third Volume" by Fergus Hume is a novel written in the late 19th century. The story follows Claude Larcher, who is compelled to uncover the truth behind the mysterious circumstances of his father’s murder, a case that has haunted him since childhood. Alongside his friend Spenser Tait, Claude navigates the complexities of a long-buried family secret as they face revelations that challenge their understanding of truth and justice. At the start of the story, we are introduced to Spenser Tait, a meticulous and orderly man, who is taken by surprise when his adventurous friend, Claude Larcher, unexpectedly returns to London after years abroad. Their reunion quickly leads to discussions about Claude's parents, particularly after he receives two cryptic letters—one from his guardian, Francis Hilliston, and another from a woman named Margaret Bezel, both hinting at a troubling family secret. As Claude digs deeper into his family’s past, he learns that his father was murdered and that his mother was accused but acquitted of the crime, sparking his determination to seek out the truth of what happened—a journey that will intertwine their lives in ways neither could anticipate.
