"The Tapestry Room: A Child's Romance" by Mrs. Molesworth is a children's fantasy novel written in the late 19th century. The story centers around a little girl named Mademoiselle Jeanne who lives in an enchanting house filled with whimsical characters and a tapestry room that sparks her imagination. Themes of wonder, childhood curiosity, and the magic of storytelling are likely explored as Jeanne dreams of adventures befitting a princess. The opening of the book introduces the reader to the wintry world surrounding Mademoiselle Jeanne, who is feeling bored and cold in her old house. She interacts with her nurse, Marcelline, and reflects on her surroundings and her wishes, such as wanting to play with her mother as a sibling instead. Her playful thoughts lead her to imagine a connection with the raven—Dudu—who she regards with a mixture of fear and fascination. The chapter sets a whimsical tone that hints at the adventure to come, particularly when Jeanne's wish for companionship is foreshadowed by the arrival of her cousin Hugh, who brings with him the promise of new adventures and discoveries in the tapestry room—a place filled with stories and magic.
