Who we are
Bokfjord is an online shop selling e-books. Bokfjord is a trading name of Hakuni Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 17140120, whose registered office is at 66 Paul Street, London, England, EC2A 4NA, United Kingdom. In these terms, "we", "us" and "Bokfjord" mean Hakuni Ltd, and "you" means the person buying from or using the shop.
You can reach us at hello@bokfjord.com and we aim to answer within two working days.
These terms and your agreement
By placing an order or using the shop, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. Please read them before you buy. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the shop.
When you place an order, we create it and pass you to our payment provider. A contract between us is formed when your payment is confirmed and we send you an order confirmation by email. If we cannot supply something you ordered — for example because a title has been withdrawn or the price shown was clearly wrong — we may decline the order and will refund any payment in full.
You must be at least 18 years old, or have the consent of a parent or guardian, to buy from us.
Your account
You need an account to buy e-books, because your library — where your files are downloaded from — lives in it. Gift cards are the one exception and can be bought without an account. Accounts are personal and intended for one individual; please do not share yours.
We do not use passwords. To sign in, you give us your email address and we send a six-digit code, which is valid for ten minutes. This means access to your email inbox is access to your Bokfjord account, so please keep your inbox secure, sign out on shared devices, and tell us promptly if you think someone else has been using your account.
You are responsible for keeping the details on your account accurate, particularly your email address — if it stops working, we cannot send you sign-in codes, order confirmations or receipts.
What you are buying
When you buy an e-book you are buying a licence to read the edition we supply, not ownership of the work. Rights in the text, the cover and the edition stay with their respective rights holders.
The licence we grant you is:
- Perpetual. It does not expire and it is not a subscription. If you keep your files, you keep the book — even if you close your account or we stop trading.
- Personal and non-commercial. For your own reading and that of your immediate household.
- Device-unlimited. Copy your files to as many of your own devices as you like, and make backups.
- Non-transferable. You may not sell, rent, sub-licence, give away or lend the files, and you may not upload them anywhere others can get them.
You may quote short passages as permitted by copyright law, including for review or study, with attribution.
DRM-free files
Every e-book is supplied as a single EPUB file with no DRM. There is nothing to authorise, no reading app you are obliged to use, and no limit on the devices you can read on. EPUB opens in most e-reader apps and on most e-readers; please check that it works with the device you intend to read on before you buy, and ask us if you are unsure.
Read it anywhere, on anything, forever. Just don't put it on the internet for other people to download.
Prices, currency and tax
Our prices are set and charged in euro (EUR). On the Norwegian-language site they are also shown in Norwegian kroner (NOK) for convenience, converted at a rate we set; the amount actually charged is always the euro figure shown at checkout. If your card is not in euro, your bank converts the payment at its own rate and may charge a fee. That fee is not ours.
Book prices exclude VAT. The VAT that applies is worked out at checkout from your billing country, added to the subtotal, and shown before you pay. No VAT is charged when you buy a gift card; VAT is charged on the books it is later spent on.
We may change prices at any time, but the price shown at checkout is the price you pay for that order. If a price is obviously wrong — a decimal point in the wrong place, say — we are not obliged to honour it, and will contact you before doing anything with your order.
Payment
Payment is taken on a secure page run by our payment provider, using the methods shown there. We never see or store your card details. The billing details you give at checkout are passed to the provider for the payment and printed on your receipt.
Your order is created, and your cart emptied, when you go to the payment page. If you leave that page without paying, the order stays unpaid and nothing is charged; add the titles again when you want to try once more.
If a payment is later reversed or charged back, we may withdraw access to the titles bought with it until the matter is settled.
Delivery and your library
Delivery is electronic and normally immediate. As soon as your payment is confirmed — usually within seconds — the books appear in your library, ready to download, and we email you an order confirmation. A PDF receipt is available from your order history.
Download links are created when you ask for one and expire shortly afterwards, so they cannot be passed around. If a saved link stops working, sign in to your library and download the book again — there is no limit on how many times you can.
We aim to keep every title you have bought downloadable from your library indefinitely, and we will give you notice if that is ever going to change. Because we cannot promise it for all time, we recommend downloading and backing up your files rather than relying on our library as your only copy.
Gift cards
Bokfjord gift cards can be bought for any amount from €20 to €500. They are priced and charged in euro, and a card is worth the euro amount it was bought for — where a kroner figure is shown beside it, that is a guide only.
- Delivery. The code is emailed to the buyer once the payment is confirmed, usually within seconds. If you bought the card while signed in, it also appears under Gift cards in your account.
- Spending it. Enter the code at checkout and it comes off the order total, including VAT. A code is used once: anything it does not cover is payable by card, and any value left over after that order is not carried forward.
- Limits. A gift card cannot be used to buy another gift card, and cannot be exchanged for cash or refunded to a card, except where the law requires it or under your right to cancel.
- Date of birth. Gift cards are issued and their balances held by a specialist voucher partner acting on our behalf, which requires the date of birth of anyone who buys or spends one. We ask for it once and save it to your account.
- Keep the code safe. Anyone who has the code can spend it. We cannot replace a code that someone else has already used, so treat it like cash.
Right to cancel
If you are a consumer, the law normally gives you 14 days to cancel a purchase made online — in the UK under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and in Norway and the rest of the EEA under the equivalent national rules, such as the Norwegian Right of Withdrawal Act (angrerettloven).
E-books. Digital content supplied straight away is an exception. By placing an order for e-books, you ask us to make them available immediately, and you acknowledge that you lose your right to cancel once they are available in your library — which happens as soon as your payment is confirmed.
Gift cards. You can cancel a gift card purchase within 14 days of buying it, as long as the code has not been used. Write to us with your order number and we will refund you in full.
Once an e-book is in your library, you cannot cancel the purchase simply because you have changed your mind. Please check the title, edition and language on the product page before you pay.
None of this affects your statutory rights if a file is faulty, incomplete or not what was described. Those are covered next.
Refunds and faulty files
We will put things right if something is wrong with what we sold you. Tell us within a reasonable time and we will replace the file or refund you in full if:
- the file is corrupt, incomplete, or will not open;
- it is not the title, edition or language you ordered;
- it differs materially from how we described it on the product page;
- you were charged more than once for the same order.
We may ask what device or app you are using first, since many problems turn out to be fixable in a couple of minutes.
Beyond that, and beyond your statutory rights, we also operate a goodwill window: if you bought a title by mistake and have not downloaded it, write to us within 14 days and we will normally refund it. Refunds go back to the payment method you used, usually within five working days, though your bank may take longer to show them.
We do not give refunds because you did not enjoy a book, and we cannot refund a title you have downloaded and kept.
Catalogue changes
We add and withdraw titles, and prices change. A book on sale today may not be tomorrow.
A title being withdrawn from sale does not affect a copy you have already bought: it stays in your library, your licence continues, and you can still download it. In the rare case where we are legally required to stop distributing a title we have already sold, we will contact you and refund what you paid.
Acceptable use
When using the shop, please do not:
- copy, share, upload or resell files, or make them available on a network, file-sharing service or public site;
- use bots, scrapers or automated tools to harvest the catalogue, prices or content, or to bulk-download files;
- attempt to gain access to another person's account, order data, library or gift card;
- probe, overload or interfere with the shop, its infrastructure or its security;
- use the shop for anything unlawful, or to infringe anyone's rights.
Text and data mining, including using our catalogue or any purchased content to train machine-learning models, is not permitted without our written consent and that of the rights holder.
Intellectual property
Rights in the books belong to their respective rights holders. Everything else about the shop — the name Bokfjord, the mark, the wording, the design and the code — belongs to us or our licensors, and may not be copied or used without permission.
Availability and support
We would like the shop to be available all the time, but we do not guarantee it. We may need to take it down for maintenance, and things sometimes break. Where we can, we will give notice of planned downtime.
Support is by email at hello@bokfjord.com. We answer in English and Norwegian.
Our responsibility to you
If we fail to meet these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of that failure. We are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable, or that arises because you did not keep a backup of files we delivered to you.
Where our liability can lawfully be limited, it is limited to the amount you paid for the order the claim relates to. We do not exclude or limit our liability where it would be unlawful to do so — including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for your statutory rights as a consumer, such as those under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
We are not responsible for the opinions expressed in the books we sell.
Suspension and closing accounts
You can ask us to close your account at any time by writing to hello@bokfjord.com from the email address on the account. Files you have already downloaded remain yours to keep, so please download anything you want before you go.
We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms — in particular the licence and acceptable use sections — or where we are required to by law. Where it is appropriate and lawful to do so, we will warn you first and give you a chance to put it right. If we close your account for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund purchases you can no longer access.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the shop changes or the law does. The version in force is always the one published here, with its date at the top.
For changes that materially affect your rights, we will email registered customers at least 30 days before they take effect. Changes never apply retroactively to an order you have already placed. Continuing to use the shop after a change takes effect means you accept the new version.
Law, disputes and complaints
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes may be brought before the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also bring proceedings in your local courts. If you are a consumer resident in Norway or elsewhere in the EEA, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your own country, or of your right to bring proceedings there.
Please come to us first — most problems are quicker to solve directly. If we cannot agree, consumers in the UK can get advice from Citizens Advice. Consumers in Norway can ask the Norwegian Consumer Council (Forbrukerrådet) to mediate and, if that does not resolve it, take the complaint to the Consumer Disputes Committee (Forbrukerklageutvalget). Consumers elsewhere in the EEA can get help with a cross-border complaint from the European Consumer Centre in their country.
