About this book
"Een abel spel van Lanseloet van Denemerken" by Anonymous is a Middle Dutch play written around 1350. Prince Lanseloet of Denmark falls in love with Sanderijn, a young woman of lower social standing who serves his mother. When his mother intervenes with a cunning scheme, tragedy unfolds as miscommunication and social barriers destroy their relationship. This earliest known example of bourgeois drama explores impossible love across class divisions and the devastating consequences of deception.
