About this book

"Juliette Drouet's Love-Letters to Victor Hugo" by Juliette Drouet and Louis Guimbaud is a biographical collection of letters written in the early to mid-19th century. The work details the passionate relationship between the famous French poet Victor Hugo and his long-time mistress, Juliette Drouet, revealing their emotional exchanges and the context of their love affair. The opening of the collection introduces readers to the origins of the letters, explaining how Hugo, driven by jealousy, encouraged Drouet to write to him while he was away. These letters, which she referred to as "scribbles," provide an unfiltered look at her thoughts, feelings, and daily life as she navigated their complex relationship. As the narrative unfolds, it hints at Drouet's deep love for Hugo, her struggles with societal expectations, and the artist's rivalry and emotional turbulence that characterized their time together. This portion sets the stage for a poignant exploration of devotion, art, and the challenges faced by both lovers within the context of their respective lives and aspirations.
